I personally like to mix it up with the scales. Usually I use more than one type of "scale" on my dragons to make them seem a bit more "pretty" ^^ but when I want them to be scary I'll use the most haphazard "scale patterns" that I can. I was looking for more scale patterns and well I think the "rock" scales look awesome I've never seen that type of pattern before and I give ya props for that
Just finished reading your dragon tutorial, I drew a dragonling and when I tried coloring it, I did about everything completely opposite of what you described! Ha! I hope these might help me to color it and give it some nice texture. I have been wondering how other people do scales.
About to start scales on a Chinese dragon and this is perfect! Thank you! I know they have more fish-like scales versus snake or lizard scales so II is perfect! Been debating how to color it all, I'm thinking maybe pastels b/c I have them on hand but also considering watercolor and ink - any suggestions (WIP as of yesterday after noon though full drawing, aside from scales, is now completed: [link])
