Mononoke Night by sanguisGelidus Mononoke Night by sanguisGelidus

I am currently selling a Fantasy Art Calendar for 2013 here on dA! :D If you want have a look here: [link]

Another experiment, in which I tried to convert a daytime picture by me into a night scene! ^^ I also tried to make some kind of 3 Dimensional effect! :D I hope I succeeded, this took quite a time (not only some simple filters.. xD). Hope you like this little experiment! :D

Mononoke Night by =sanguisGelidus ( Suggested by Kaoyux and Featured by Lyricanna )
Let me start off by saying that I do enjoy your paintings and I really like the glow from this piece. It has an otherworldly glow to it that feels appropriate of Princess Mononoke.

However, I'll tell you what I've been told. Night does not equal black and this piece has WAY too much black. You lose so much detail that the original has (Like the blood and her hair), and while yes in the night you lose some sense of detail that doesn't have to be the case. Instead of making this so dark, utilize the cool glows you have much more than you currently are. Don't let the trees disappear, they give your picture it's setting. You can give the feeling of night without having to lose half of your picture. You as the artist can manipulate reality, especially in a fantasy piece like this.

I say this because I do really like your works, but in my opinion your day scenes are far stronger than your night paintings because you tend to lean too far to darkness when you can utilize more value to your advantage. Of course, this is all my opinion and take it as you please.

I like this version even more then the first, let me start with that. In the day version, most of my attention fell on Mononoke's eyes, because it matched the overall warm color scheme, and the wolf's eyes popped out because they were blue and complimented the picture. THIS time though, Mononoke's lovely eyes are the contrast while the wolf's are part of the scheme. I find myself unsure of which character to look at, and not in a bad way at all; rather it makes the whole picture more eerie and mysterious this way.

I also REALLY like the work you did with the red blood and body-markings on Mononoke and the wolf, as they could easily have been the focal-points because they ARE red and it's in the color's nature. Though I do look from wolf to girl and back again, I am still looking at their eyes, rather than the markings on their faces. Excellent job on toning the marks down to keep our attention on your subjects!

Wow this looks great! I actually had the original as my desktop background and I loved it of course, but there were a few things that bothered me the more I looked at it. I didn't think some of the colors (like the deep blue of the wolf's eyes) were distributed enough and I didn't think the picture looked as unified. Now I think this piece is improved! The original is quite beautiful as well though. :blowkiss:
